Youth Leadership Conference Held at Governor House Peshawar

Peshawar: A Youth Leadership Conference was held at the Governor House Peshawar, under the auspices of Youth Leadership Pakistan, with Faisal Karim Kundi attending as the chief guest.

Addressing the participants, the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emphasised that young people must cultivate resilience, tolerance and a forward-looking mindset in their lives. He stated that the Governor House is actively providing guidance and patronage to the youth of the province to help them move forward in a constructive and positive direction.

Faisal Karim Kundi urged young people to dream big, adopt hard work as a guiding principle and develop self-confidence. He stressed that youth should not limit themselves to personal ambitions but should also contribute meaningfully to society, the country and future generations.

He noted that the youth of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have historically symbolised bravery, honour, and leadership—qualities that, he said, will enable them to succeed in the future.

The Governor further remarked that “successful youth” is not merely a slogan but a responsibility tied to building a brighter future. He added that true leadership lies in creating opportunities and easing pathways for others.

Senate By-Election on Murad Saeed’s Seat Postponed

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the by-election scheduled for a vacant Senate seat, issuing a stay order that halts the electoral process for the time being.

The development comes amid legal ambiguity over the constitutional status of the Senate seat previously held by Murad Saeed. The matter was brought before the commission, which, after hearing a petition filed by Jalal Khan, a Member of the Provincial Assembly from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), ordered a suspension of the by-election proceedings.

According to the petitioner, Murad Saeed has yet to take the oath as a senator. Under the Constitution, an individual is formally recognised as a member of the Senate only after taking the oath. On this basis, the petition questioned the legal standing of declaring the seat vacant and proceeding with a by-election.

The ECP has directed that no further steps be taken in the electoral process until the matter is fully clarified from a legal and constitutional standpoint. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 7.

As a result of the stay order, the by-election scheduled for April 23 has been temporarily suspended. Constitutional experts suggest that the eventual ruling in this case could set an important precedent for handling similar matters in the future.

The announcement was made at a ceremony attended by Provincial Health Minister Khaliq-ur-Rehman, Health Secretary Shahidullah Khan and Director General Health Services Dr. Shaheen Afridi. Appointment letters were formally distributed to the newly inducted professionals.

Speaking on the occasion, the health minister said that the placement of psychologists in DHQs would ensure the availability of timely and quality mental health services at the district level, reducing the need for patients to travel to major urban centres for treatment. He emphasised that the recruitment process was conducted transparently and strictly on merit.

He urged the newly appointed psychologists to carry out their responsibilities with integrity, dedication and a strong sense of public service, adding that they would serve as a valuable asset to the provincial health system.

Highlighting the growing mental health burden in the province, the minister noted that decades of militancy, displacement, and natural disasters have led to a rise in psychological disorders. He stressed the urgent need for early diagnosis and treatment, particularly for conditions such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which are affecting a large segment of the population.

Under the initiative, dedicated mental health desks will be established in DHQs to facilitate screening, counselling and an effective referral system. The program also aims to ensure that women and youth can access services in a safe and dignified environment. Additionally, data collected at the district level will support evidence-based policymaking in the future.

The minister further announced that the government will launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign on mental health. Religious scholars and community elders will be engaged to help reduce social stigma associated with mental health issues.

He added that targeted awareness campaigns for youth will be conducted through schools, colleges, and social media platforms to promote early guidance and mental health literacy among the younger generation.
