GOC 9 Division Chairs High-Level Jirga with Wazir Tribe Elders in Kohat

KOHAT: Under the leadership of GOC 9 Division Major General Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti, a significant jirga was held at Headquarters 9 Division Kohat with tribal elders and notables from the Wazir tribe.

The meeting was attended by Commissioner Kohat Mehtabullah, Regional Police Officer Abbas Majeed Marwat, Deputy Commissioner Kurram Ashfaq Khan, Assistant Deputy Commissioner Amir Nawaz, and 18 representatives of the Wazir Welfare Committee.

Welfare Committee’s Commitments and Demands

During the jirga, the Wazir Welfare Committee shared that a 37-member committee had been formed to oversee regional development, social welfare, and security matters. The committee pledged to maintain law and order and ensure road safety, while also demanding the approval of arms licenses and the early return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Representatives also sought compensation for wartime damages, appreciated the demolition of multiple bunkers, and identified remaining ones for removal. They expressed gratitude for the restoration of Bagan Mosque and requested repairs for Talokunj Mosque.

Military Leadership Reaffirms Peace Priorities

Addressing the jirga, Major General Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti emphasized that establishing sustainable peace in the region is the top priority, stating that conflict benefits no one. He appreciated the efforts of the Wazir Welfare Committee and encouraged empowering it further.

He assured that remaining bunkers will be removed under the Khyber Agreement, and discussions with relevant departments on arms licenses are ongoing.

Youth Encouraged to Join Recruitment Drives

He also urged tribal youth to actively participate in Army and Frontier Corps recruitments in Tall and Dogar, and welcomed the formation of liaison committees to strengthen coordination between police and the community.

The jirga concluded with prayers for the peace, stability, and prosperity of District Kurram, Pakistan, and the Pakistan Armed Forces.
