NDMA warns of Impending flash floods and urban flooding in Indus and Kabul catchment areas
ISLAMABAD: As monsoon season progresses, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) sounds the alarm of potential disaster in the catchment areas of the Rivers Indus and Kabul. A high-level meeting of the National Emergency Operation Centre, chaired by the acting Chairman of NDMA, reviewed the water reservoirs situation in the country and issued a warning of heavy rainfalls from July 27 to July 30.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department, Federal Flood Commission, and other key stakeholders were present at the meeting to discuss the critical situation.
The NDMA emphasises the need for coordination among all relevant departments to mitigate the disaster and ensure effective contingency plans. Public awareness campaigns are urged to educate citizens about the risks associated with the monsoon season, while vigilant monitoring of rivers and reservoirs is called for during this period.
Both the Tarbela Dam and Mangla Dam Management Authorities provide updates on their capacity, with concerns of potential floods but active preparations to handle contingencies. SUPARCO shares satellite images of hazard-prone areas, and the Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Waters reports on the status of Indian dams. With the looming threat of flash floods and urban flooding, authorities are bracing for the challenges ahead.
