World Bank delegation visits development projects in Landi Kotal

Landi Kotal: A delegation from the World Bank recently conducted a visit to various development project sites in Landi Kotal, Khyber tribal district, where initiatives have been completed under the Pakistan Community Support Project (PCSP). Led by Robin Mearns, Practice Manager for Social Sustainability and Inclusion in South Asia, the delegation consisted of senior members of the World Bank in Pakistan, the PCSP project management team, and representatives from the district administration.

Khyber is one of the regions where PCSP projects are being implemented, alongside Peshawar and Nowshera, collectively forming the corridor for the CASA-1000 transmission line.

During their visit, the World Bank delegation observed several sites in Landi Kotal, including a rehabilitated girls’ primary school, a street pavement scheme with a drainage system, and a flood protection wall that was raised in response to last year’s monsoon floods.

Engaging directly with community members and beneficiaries of these completed projects, the World Bank team praised their active involvement in the development efforts and acknowledged the positive impact these initiatives have had on the local population.

Earlier in the day, the delegation received an in-depth briefing from Shakeel Ahmed, the project director of PCSP, regarding the overall progress of implementation and specific achievements across all project components. The delegation expressed its appreciation for the transformative work undertaken by PCSP within the CASA-1000 corridor.

Robin Mearns, speaking on behalf of the World Bank, lauded the dedication of PCSP and its tangible contributions to the community. He emphasized that the project serves as an example of collaborative efforts that drive sustainable development and social inclusivity in the region.

KP athletes secure bronze medals in National Youth Air Rifle Championship

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) showcased their prowess in the field of shooting by clinching bronze medals in the National Youth and Junior Air Rifle and Pistol Championship, which took place at the Army Military Unit in Jhelum. The achievement was highlighted by international shooter Salman Khan, who pointed out the untapped potential within the region due to limited opportunities for talented players to reach national and international platforms.

Salman Khan explained that the successful bronze medal achievement came after a single day of practice, underscoring the latent talent among KP’s athletes. He noted that while natural talent undoubtedly plays a role in shooting accuracy, practice and opportunities are paramount for nurturing this talent to its full potential.

Practice forms the foundation for building muscle memory, coordination, and mental focus necessary for accurate shooting. Athletes dedicate extensive hours to training and drills in order to refine their skills, often utilizing coaching, video analysis, and strategic research to enhance their technique. While natural talent provides an advantage, athletes, regardless of their innate abilities, must put in diligent work to achieve excellence.

Salman Khan emphasised the distinct shooting techniques required for different sports and positions. From basketball to soccer, each sport demands tailored techniques for optimal performance. Mental aspects, including concentration, focus, and confidence, also significantly influence shooting success. Athletes employ visualisation, positive self-talk, and mental strategies to elevate their performance levels.

While natural talent can expedite progress, consistent practice remains the cornerstone for developing exceptional shooting skills. The athletes who secured the bronze medals in the Team Championship—Ajab Khan Afridi, Mikail Khan Afridi, and Salaar Khan Afridi—highlight the region’s potential in shooting sports and exemplify the importance of continuous dedication and practice for achieving success at both national and international levels.
