Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) showcased their prowess in the field of shooting by clinching bronze medals in the National Youth and Junior Air Rifle and Pistol Championship, which took place at the Army Military Unit in Jhelum. The achievement was highlighted by international shooter Salman Khan, who pointed out the untapped potential within the region due to limited opportunities for talented players to reach national and international platforms.
Salman Khan explained that the successful bronze medal achievement came after a single day of practice, underscoring the latent talent among KP’s athletes. He noted that while natural talent undoubtedly plays a role in shooting accuracy, practice and opportunities are paramount for nurturing this talent to its full potential.
Practice forms the foundation for building muscle memory, coordination, and mental focus necessary for accurate shooting. Athletes dedicate extensive hours to training and drills in order to refine their skills, often utilizing coaching, video analysis, and strategic research to enhance their technique. While natural talent provides an advantage, athletes, regardless of their innate abilities, must put in diligent work to achieve excellence.
Salman Khan emphasised the distinct shooting techniques required for different sports and positions. From basketball to soccer, each sport demands tailored techniques for optimal performance. Mental aspects, including concentration, focus, and confidence, also significantly influence shooting success. Athletes employ visualisation, positive self-talk, and mental strategies to elevate their performance levels.
While natural talent can expedite progress, consistent practice remains the cornerstone for developing exceptional shooting skills. The athletes who secured the bronze medals in the Team Championship—Ajab Khan Afridi, Mikail Khan Afridi, and Salaar Khan Afridi—highlight the region’s potential in shooting sports and exemplify the importance of continuous dedication and practice for achieving success at both national and international levels.
